There are many sites to get free ebooks.
Inkmesh - posts ebooks as they become available from many different sites. Highly recommended.
Smashwords - Independent authors publish books on this site. Many of them for free.
For books with a copyright prior to 1923 there are three sites I have used.
Barnes and Noble, Borders, Amazon and Google have free ebooks listed on their sites.
